Creative people are the engine of our current economy and the lifeblood of any organization, says researcher Richard Florida in his book, The Rise of the Creative Class. Florida’s definition of “creative” includes engineers, lawyers, computer programmers, designers, architects, writers – basically, anyone who is paid to think.
His research reveals that one of the keys to attracting, recruiting and retaining highly prized creative talent is diversity in your workforce. Creative people don’t always fit societal norms. They look for employers who respect difference and encourage an open atmosphere that allows freedom of creative expression.
To creative types, a wide variety of racial and ethnic groups and support for gay employees, are signs that a company values different perspectives. It signals that this is a company where they will feel comfortable – regardless of their own background.
